Gawharshad Institute of Higher Education conducted a seminar on “EUPOL’s role (European Union Police) in strengthening and training ANP (Afghanistan National Police), especially women police”.
After Dr. Sima Samar’s opening speech, Pia Stjernvall, Head of Mission for EUPOL Afghanistan, explained that EUPOL’s mission is to support Afghan government in building a civilian police service that operates within an improved rule of law framework and in respect of human rights. She elaborated on how EUPOL helps to enhance institutional reforms and improves capacities within the Ministry of Interior and ANP by providing expert advice at strategic level and conducting standard training courses.
Later in her speech, she emphasized on police role not only as identifying, tracking and arresting criminals but also as working actively to build trust, credibility and cooperative relationship with the community they are serving and recognized this as instrumental in fostering sustainable peace in the country.
After describing the outstanding increase in the number of women police in the country and improved working conditions for them, Ms. Stjernvall encouraged women to join police and provide their country with the much-needed service.
